Even with pockets of blue sky today due to a change in air flow, smoke from the Rim Fire near Yosemite will continue to impact Carson City, Carson Valley and Lyon County through the weekend.
Dense smoke advisories continue for much of the Carson City region and into the Sierra. Heavier smoke could return Sunday and Monday, however, due to a more southerly flow of air, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.
The south to southwest air flow will continue through early into next week, therefore areas downwind of the Rim Fire will continue to be impacted by smoke for at least a few days, according to the weather service.
The density of smoke will depend on day to day output of smoke from the Rim Fire, which as of Saturday, had burned 219,277 acres and is 35 percent contained. South of Interstate 80 and East of Lake Tahoe will continue to see the greatest impacts from the fire through Labor Day. Chances for appreciable smoke are lower through Saturday afternoon north of Interstate 80 and in the Tahoe Basin but will increase Sunday and Monday as the air flow turns more southerly.
