Carson City man jailed, admits to shooting at vehicle after rock thrown

A Carson City man was arrested and faces a felony firearms charge related to an incident Saturday night in which a vehicle was shot at, with one bullet lodging into a funeral home.

Gregory John Lara, 21, was arrested in the 200 block of Carson Meadows Drive on Sunday, 8:30 p.m.

According to the arrest report, officers were tipped off about a van that was located in a Carson Meadows apartment complex. Officers saw that the van had a large hole in the glass that was consistent with the suspect vehicle investigators had been looking for in the Saturday night incident in which a vehicle's windows were shot at in the area near Woodside Drive, Fairview and Desatoya. No one was injured in the shooting.

Officers went to the unit where the van was assigned to and saw Lara inside through a sliding glass door. The officer motioned to Lara to step outside and he did as requested, the arrest report states.

The officer asked Lara if it was his van and he advised that it belonged to his brother, the report states. The officer asked if he was in possession of the van on Saturday night and Lara replied "yes," the arrest report states.

Lara was asked by the officer if he knew why the Sheriff's Office was contacting him and he replied "the shooting," according to the arrest report.

Without prompting, Lara advised that he was scared when a group of "gang members" threw a rock through his window so he shot at them at least five times, the arrest report states.

Lara advised that the Glock 10 mm semi-automatic firearm he used to fire at the subjects was inside the apartment. After permission was granted, the gun was collected, according to the arrest report.

Officers contacted the Tri County Gang Force who advised five 10mm shell casings were recovered at the shooting scene, and a 10mm "slug" was recovered from inside Fitzhenry's Funeral Home, located directly across the street from the shooting scene, the arrest report states.

The funeral home is an occupied dwelling with subjects living within the living quarters of the home, the report states. Lara was arrested and charged with discharging a firearm at an occupied dwelling and discharging a firearm within the city limits. He was taken to jail and booked on the two charges.

Bail: $20,500.
