Organizers of the 30th annual La Ka Lel Be Pow Wow to be held in Carson City during the Nevada Day weekend say the event is taking shape and are looking for sponsors and raffle donations to help bring the event to its fullest.
The pow wow began 30 years ago at the Carson Indian Colony. It is and has always been a part of the Nevada Day celebrations, said co-organizer Brandi Colunga.
However, through the years, some of those who participated in organizing it have stepped down. So, along with Martin Montgomery, the two are hoping to continue the tradition.
The pow wow has brought people from all over the country as well as the world. We have had people come and visit it from New Zealand, Europe, Australia and many other countries, said Colunga.
"La Ka Lel Be has been known in pow wow country as a great pow wow to attend. While participant numbers have shifted, the pow wow still brings in participants from around the U.S. and Canada," she said.
Here is a letter the committee has drafted to the community for items to keep this pow wow going:
Dear Friends,
The La Ka Lel Be Pow Wow committee is a nonprofit organization who is devoted to uniting our community striving, to bring together young and elderly through dance and music. We will be hosting the 30th annual Nevada Day Pow Wow. The La Ka Lel Be Pow Wow has been a Nevada Day event proclaimed by Governor Guinn and Senator Harry Reid to remain a Nevada Day tradition.
We are requesting help from the community to make this event a successful one. There are many ways you can help. We are looking for donated items to be used as raffle items, such as gift cards or any other item to be used as a raffle prize; as our raffle is our biggest fundraiser. We are also in need of monetary donations. All donations are tax deductable and very much appreciated.
We ask that you consider supporting our event. This year our event's budget is $ 14,500. Funds from the event will be used to help pay for our head staff, dance competitions and the general function of conducting such an event.
This is a community event and it is completely drug and alcohol free; open to the public. The event will include; music, dancing, and Native arts/crafts, and food vendors. Admission is free. There will be singers, performers, and spectators coming from all over the United States and Canada.
Your donation will be acknowledged in several ways. We will recognize your business as an appreciation to our spectators, vendors and participants as well as on any promotional materials we produce. The La Ka Lel Be Pow Wow Committee relies on support of generous donors such as you. Your donation will help ensure the success of our event and many more to come.
We thank you for your consideration of our request, and look forward to hearing from you in the near future.
Sincerely,
Brandi Colunga
