Carson City Symphony's comprehensive program of string instruction begins the last week of August, after school, at four locations in Carson City.

Strings in the Schools, directed by the Symphony's Education Director, Sue Jesch, provides free beginning violin lessons for students grades 2-5, a beginning cello program for selected 5th graders, and ensemble/orchestra experience for string students in all grades. Tuition and books are subsidized by the Carson City Symphony Association.

The program is for Carson City public-, private-, and home-school students, and classes are filled on a first come, first served basis. Some scholarships are available for instruments. To register, and for more information, call Sue Jesch at 775-450-5584.

Beginning Violin, for students in Grades 2-5, is held after school until 4:10 p.m., on Mondays beginning August 26 at Bordewich Bray Elementary School, 110 Thompson Street, and on Wednesdays beginning August 28 at Empire Elementary School, 1260 Monte Rosa Drive. Students may enroll for either session.

Beginning Cello, for students in grade 5, is held after school until 4:00 p.m., on Fridays beginning September 6 at Mark Twain Elementary School, 2111 Carriage Crest Drive. Instructor is Symphony Principal Cellist, Lou Groffman. Enrollment for this new class is limited to six pre-selected students.

String Ensemble, for students who have had previous experience on violin, viola, cello, bass, or harp, is held after school on Thursdays, 3:30-4:30 p.m. beginning August 29, at 1329 S. Carson Street in the Carson Mall.

STRAZZ, an alternative-styles orchestra for more advanced string players, is open to high school and middle school string students by invitation. It is held on Thursdays, 6:00-7:00 p.m., beginning August 29, at 1329 S. Carson Street in the Carson Mall.

Carson City Symphony's Strings in the Schools program is funded in part by grants from the Nevada Arts Council, a state agency, and the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency; Partnership Carson City; the Sierra Philharmonic League; and private donations.
