The Carson City Chamber Blood Drive Challenge took off early Monday morning with the city's top officials donating blood. Arriving early, Sheriff Kenny Furlong was the first in line to give blood, followed by District Attorney Neil Rombardo.

Mayor Robert Crowell gave it a good try, but his iron was off a fraction of a point thus was denied the opportunity. He stuck around, however, to give Furlong and Rombardo moral support. The first Chamber board member to give blood this morning was Curt Spradley of Carson Coffee.

For those interested in blood types, here's the rundown: Furlong, Crowell and Spradley are Type O. Rombardo's is Type AB. For those interested in personality types to go along with the blood types, Type O is the leader who keeps striving until they reach their goal.

The Type AB is cool and controlled along with being a natural entertainer.

Less than 5 percent of the eligible population donates blood. As many as 40,000 units of red cellsa r3e needed daily in the U.S. and more than 23 milliion units of blood components are transfused every year.

Please join the Chamber's Blood Drive that will be in force until March 30th. Make your Easter blood donation today and tell them the Chamber sent you.

— Ronni Hannaman is executive director of the Carson City Chamber of Commerce.
