The Carson City Sheriff's Office plans on our first firing of the Carson City drug incinerator on August 22 at 1:30 in the afternoon at the city corporate yard. We are awaiting our final EPA authorization, but believe it will be delivered well before the planned date. Also now up and running is our public drug drop off box at the Front Desk Lobby of the Sheriff's Office sponsored directly by Partnership Carson City.
Both Shelly Aldean and Partnership Carson City have been the motivational enthusiasm to complete this project. Years ago, while Shelly was on the Board of Supervisors, she expressed a concern about drugs entering our underground water supply. Her comments, and the eager enthusiasm of Kathy Bartosz at Partnership Carson City, has brought us to the hopefully HOT August firing date of the grant funded incinerator. This Office of Criminal Justice Assistance grant proposes regional use, and we've partnered primarily with the Douglas County Sheriff's Office to kick this off. We have always believed that the close relationship and proximity of the two departments creates a great opportunity for success that can be expanded upon.
With just a little luck, all of the planning, permitting (led by Dave Bruketta at our city Treatment Plant) and hard work will pay off on the 22nd. To the Carson and Douglas County Sheriff's Office's, we will no longer have to risk travel or pay the costs of transporting pounds of illegal substances over great distances to get rid of them appropriately to EPA standards. And even better, this disposal method will thrust regional law enforcement into an innovative role of "doing our part" to protect our vital resources (ground water supply).
While the scheduled date is subject to change, we have progressed to the point of setting the kickoff appointment time/date with real confidence. A special thanks to everyone involved who has carried this vision to a proud community reality.
