One person has died in a three-vehicle head-on crash Tuesday night near Cave Rock on Highway 50, the Nevada Highway Patrol reports.
The Reno Gazette-Journal reports that a 3-year-old girl died from injuries sustained in the accident. An NHP spokesman could not confirm the age or identity of the victim.
"There were a lot of people involved; we are attempting to get the names and ages of those involved and will provide an update," said Trooper David Gibson.
The crash was report at around 8:50 p.m. A preliminary investigation is that a Cadillac SUV was traveling westbound on HIghway 50 when for unknown reasons crossed over the double yellow lines. It side swiped a GMC SUV that was traveling eastbound and caused it to overturn. The Cadillac continued westbound until it struck a Chrysler minivan that was also traveling eastbound, head on. The fatality involved a person inside the Chrysler, who was flown to Renown Medical Center in Reno.
Several occupants from the involved vehicles where transported to area hospitals. Two went by helicopter and eight by ground ambulance.
All travel lanes were closed for approximately five hours while crews investigated the scene.
