“Feds Feed Families” a food drive to benefit the hungry in our community has kicked off again for the summer. In Carson City, federal employees from USDA Rural Development, the Bureau of Reclamation, Bureau of Indian Affairs, Federal Highway Administration, and the U.S. Geological Survey will be volunteering and collecting donated food in front of Grocery Outlet, at 1831 N. Carson, on Aug. 3 and Aug. 10, from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. each day. Grocery Outlet owner Dave Cox provides discounts on purchases for food drives.

Joyce Buckingham, executive director of the Ron Wood Family Resource Center, says the food pantry is in dire need of donations at this time of year. “We serve between 2,000-3,000 people each month, providing them 2-3 days of emergency rations,” Buckingham said. “Right now, our supplies for protein items, like peanut butter, chili and tuna, are depleted, and it will be very tight until the holiday food drives begin.”

Since 2009, federal workers have donated and collected 15.2 million pounds of food and other non-perishable items to support families across America. Nationwide, last year’s Feds Feed Families (FFF) effort collected more than 7.2 million pounds of food.

Ongoing donations of canned foods or nonperishable dry foods can be made at the USDA Rural Development Office, located at 1390 S. Curry St; or in the west side lobby of the federal building at 705 Plaza Street. Collection bins are set up just inside the doors at both locations. The food drive will run through Aug. 28, 2013.
