Changes in wind direction have made for extreme fire behavior Saturday morning for firefighters battling the Bison Fire. About 20 homes are threatened again. The Douglas County Sheriff's Office and East Fork Fire have implemented evacuation operations and structure protection.
Sierra Front Interagency Dispatch Center reports very active behavior at 8:20 a.m., now estimated at 7,000 acres, with the fire now established on both sides of the Pine Nut Mountain range. The fire is 20 percent contained. Go here for the latest from Sierra Front.
Windy conditions in the upper elevations have prevented the use of aircraft in certain locations, said Douglas County Sheriff's Sgt. Pat Brooks. These winds have fueled this fire making for extreme fire behavior and very dangerous situations.
The fire has crested the ridge south of Mount Siegal, the tallest peak East of Gardnerville, Brooks said.
Additional resources have been ordered and the Sierra Front Type 3 Team was to have transition into command at 6 a.m. A Great Basin Type 2 Team has been ordered to manage the fire on Sunday. A type 2 team was ordered due to the complexity of this fire.
Pine Nut Road at Out-R-Way has been closed to non-residence until further notice. At this time no structures have been damaged and no injuries have been reported.
