An unusual weather system will move into the Sierra and Western Nevada beginning late Sunday, bringing rain to the Lake Tahoe and Carson City regions through Tuesday, the National Weather Service reports.

A strong low pressure system that forecasters say is a "moisture plume that is atypical for this time of year" will show itself in two waves as it begins to move into the Sierra and northeast California sometime Sunday afternoon and will continue through Tuesday morning. Showers are possible across western Nevada north of Interstate 80 beginning Sunday afternoon.

Forecasters says showers may expand by late Sunday night to include Carson City and Reno, with the heaviest rainfall along the west slopes to the Sierra north of Interstate 80.

Rain will also impact the Sierra from the Lake Tahoe region north into Monday, with light rain possible across Western Nevada, according to the weather service.

Sunday's forecast for Carson City calls for mostly cloudy skies with isolated showers by Sunday night and winds 15 to 20 mph with gusts up to 30 mph. Highs will run from 76 to 81.

On Monday, rain is likely with highs 68 to 73 and wind gusts up to 30 mph. Tuesday will bring mostly cloudy skies with a chance of showers. High temperatures will range from 70 to 80.
