Carson City residents Ila Bottoms, Arnold Flores, Leana Garcia, Allison Blair, and Janae Johnston-Bucker are five of 14 students recently awarded a $1,000 scholarship certificate from Greater Nevada Credit Union.

Seventy students throughout northern Nevada applied for the scholarship program, which GNCU has offered for the past 14 years. Bottoms and Flores are attending Western Nevada College; Garcia is attending Great Basin College in Elko; Blair and Johnston-Bucker will be attending the University of Nevada, Reno.

“It’s our pleasure to provide financial support to some of the region’s best students so that they can continue their education,” said GNCU President/CEO, Wally Murray.

The scholarships were awarded on a competitive basis and winners were selected based on their financial need, academic performance, personal statement, recommendations from school and community leaders and community involvement.

The scholarships can be used for tuition, course registration, special class or laboratory fees, room and board, textbooks and class materials. In addition to the 16 total recipients (two $500 scholarships were also awarded), five alternates were named in the event that one or more of the winners is unable to enroll and attend school on a full-time basis during the 2013-2014 school year.

Greater Nevada Credit Union, open to residents of northern Nevada, is a not-for-profit financial cooperative that has served the area since 1949. The credit union has more than 45,000 members, $457 million in assets, and eight full-service branches. For more information, please visit gncu.org or call (775) 882-2060.
