Two California women stopped by Carson City Sheriff's Office deputies on Tuesday have admitted to a scheme of using stolen credit cards to buy hundreds of dollars worth of gift cards.
Markeisha Yvette Orviss, 22, and Kamesha Joann Cooper, 24, of Pittsburg, Calif., were arrested by Carson City sheriff's patrol officers in the 3900 block of South Carson Street at 12:15 p.m.
According to the arrest report, deputies were dispatched the area of Fairview and Idaho regarding a vehicle that was driving erratically and its occupants throwing items out the window. Dispatch advised that an off-duty sergeant saw the black Infinity with out of state plates driving recklessly near Lowe's where there was a possible larceny involved.
The vehicle was stopped and three females were asked to exit the vehicle. As Cooper exited the front passenger seat, a deputy observed a baggy of marijuana on the seat. Officers then ran Orviss fon a wants and warrants search and learned that she had a suspended driver's license in California.
Orviss advised that she and her friends were just "hanging out" in Carson City from California. Officers informed the women they were suspected of stealing items from Lowes. Orviss said they were not and that they were at the department store to purchase gift cards. A deputy asked Orviss if he could search her vehicle for any stolen property and the woman gave the officer permission, the arrest report states.
During the search, numerous prepaid credit cards and gift cards were found. A deputy also located a marijuana cigarette in the ashtray of the vehicle. Both Cooper and Orviss were in constrictive possession of the marijuana, the arrest report states.
Cooper was read her Miranda rights and she waived her rights and agreed to speak with the officer. She was asked about the marijuana that was on her seat when she exited the vehicle. She told the deputy the marijuana wasn't hers and that it belonged to Orviss. She was also asked about the marijuana cigarette in the ashtray, in which she also said it belonged to Orviss, the arrest report states.
Orviss was arrested for reckless driving, driving on a suspended license, and possession of less than an ounce of marijuana. While at detention, deputies found a single Vicodin prescription pill in the purse belonging to Orviss. She was also then charged with possession of a prescription drug without a prescription.
A detective responded to the jail to investigate possible fraud charges. During the investigation both women were interviewed where Orviss advised that she contacted an unknown person and purchased multiple fraudulent credit cards for $200. She further stated that she would then use the credit cards to purchase gift cards from various stores. She advised that purchasing the cards is kind of a gamble, stating some of them work and some of them don't, according to the arrest report.
During the interview with Cooper, the woman advised that she agreed to come to Carson City and Reno to use fraudulent credit cards. She stated that the agreement was that any money/gift cards obtained with the fraudulent credit cards would be split 50/50 between the two.
Several receipts were recovered showing that several hundred dollars of gift cards were purchased from Lowe's on Tuesday. The charge of forgery of credit card or debit card was also added to the women's booking sheet.
Cooper's bail was set at $5,737. Bail for Orvis was set at $9,286.
