The aviation community soars again at the Carson City Airport this Saturday with its "Flight Plan for the Future" open house — a family favorite among airplane, aircraft and aerospace enthusiasts of all ages.
The annual free event runs from 8:00 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Carson City Airport, 2600 College Parkway. More than 4,000 visitors attended in 2012, and this year’s open house promises plenty of excitement with dozens of aircraft on display and FREE plane rides for children 8-17 years of age.
Activities include flybys, plane and helicopter demonstrations, simulated space missions, robotics demonstrations, food and beverages and many more family activities. The Beech Boys, a cadre of pilots from around the region, will formation fly with their aircraft, guaranteed to dazzle anyone looking upward. Go here for photos of last year's show.
This year’s theme is focused on robotics, aviation and aerospace. Throughout the Open House event, the Challenger Learning Center will be providing interactive displays and activities geared to educate and energize people, young and old, on these exciting fields. Join the Challenger for robotics builds, simulated space missions in the Advanced Spaceflight Laboratory and tour the universe in the mobile planetarium.
The open house event kicks off at 8:00 A.M. with a delicious pancake breakfast provided by Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) and the Carson City Kiwanis. Especially exciting this year, the EAA-Young Eagles program will be providing free plane rides for children from 9 A.M. until 1 P.M., weather permitting.
Flybys begin at 9:30 A.M. and include sky divers and an exhilarating field of planes: P51 Mustang, Army Lakota, War Birds, T6 Texan, AH-1 Cobra Helicopter, T33 Shooting Star, F86 Sabre Jet, OV-10 Bronco, UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter and much more.
Planes/helicopters will be landing at the airport for public viewing. The full host of events includes hot air balloon and plane rides, a bouncy house, face painting, paper airplane contests, various aircraft, food and drink vendors, as well as performances from local dance, tumbling and martial arts studios. Visitors can also shoot a machine gun (simulated), build a robot and operate radio controlled plane models.
